In this novel set during the Great Depression, 15-year-old Mary Alice is sent to live with her grandmother in Illinois after her father loses his job. This is a sequel to A LONG WAY FROM CHICAGO, but here Mary Alice's brother, Joey, is working for a government program, so Mary Alice is spending the year with her grandmother without Joey's support.
