Not all children who have trouble paying attention are Attention Deficit Disorder kids, says Thomas Armstrong. Instead of medication, parents and doctors should at first try such things as balanced breakfasts, limiting TV time, establishing consistent rules for behavior, and family meetings. Armstrong, a former psychologist and special education teacher, states that ADD-type behavior stems not from one disorder but from a number of very complex reasons: cultural, social, psychological, educational, and possibly biological.
